John Bates
1970s Green Wool Crepe Bishop Sleeve Dress
Sold Out
This 1970s John Bates London midi dress was made in England of silk-lined dark green wool crepe. Earlier in his career, John Bates chose the name "Jean Varon" for his brand, as French fashion was considered much more elevated than British at the time. He became one of the many designers who established English fashion as a true force to be reckoned with, and he began designing more high-end pieces under his own name in the 1970s.
Features of this piece include dramatic bishop sleeves, a high neck with a jabot sewn in place, two front pockets, and a full skirt. It fastens with twenty shell buttons at the back and a button at each cuff, and has decorative buttons at the neck and on each pocket. The dress is in excellent condition, professionally dry-cleaned and ready to wear.
