Couture 1980's Silk Avant Garde Sleeve Dress
This overt 1980’s avant-garde look is from Andrea Odicini, a couturier who has enjoyed much respect and prominence amongst the fashion-savvy throughout Italy, although outside Italy his name has been less widely known. Certainly every Odicini piece I have found has clearly been of the finest quality. This dress is made of pure silk, finely textured in a varying jacquard pattern. The print of the dress is best described as a cross between pointillism and cartoon-style gradients, all in uneven vertical waves - black, white, blue and green dominate the palette. The subtle sense of motion in the print is supported by the uneven texture of the silk. The shoulders of this piece are arguably its defining feature, placing it squarely on the vanguard of 1980’s structural designs. Each shoulder pad is connected to three ample folds in the fabric of the sleeve, sewn in with supportive sturdy fabric underneath, giving each fold a sharp edge. This creates a large dramatic shoulder without puffiness. The long sleeves both end with two small black buttons to enclose. The back has a long keyhole, and does up with one black button at the back of the neck, making this a very breathable piece overall. It is lined with thin black silk chiffon, and falls to the knee. A bold and refined 1980’s choice.
