Azzedine Alaïa
c. 1988 Twine Fringe Black Cotton Corset Jacket
This very rare and collectible museum-quality piece explodes our usual fashion logic; a very durable and soft black lapelled denim jacket, with breast pocket, wide arms and all, cinched into a corset shaped with boning, and rows of twine sewn in with black fabric into a sturdy fitted shape, the twine coming out the top and bottom of the corset waist as fringe. To compound the unpredictability of the design, the front does not close like a regular corset but rather, the boning and twine stop diagonally at the front where there are 8 black buttons that close up to the chest. C. 1988, this piece was truly on the vanguard of the time.
