1980's Rare Black and Gold Metallic Three Piece Ensemble
A many-textured black and gold three piece set from esteemed designer of the British Boutique movement, Marisa Martin, who garnered such clients as Princess Margaret, Rod Stewart, Twiggy, and Queen. The tank top is decorated at the front with a v-shaped layer of black satin with a textured floral pattern, which is accented by dark gold metallic trim and a few inches of finely pleated black velour. The top encloses on one side with six textured gold metallic buttons. The pleated velour skirt fits around the waist and falls just below the knee. The quilted black satin on waist and hips fit snugly, the seam accenting the hips. The two generous pockets on either side open at the edge of the quilted trim, making the pockets both more subtle and more natural to fit one’s hands into. Gold metallic thread punctuates the quilted portion, and the swath of Asian-inspired floral patterned material at the front of the waist. Encloses with a zipper at the back and two hooks on the waist. The velour has a nice weight to it, adding subtle motion with movement.
The loose fitting jacket extends down to the hips, enclosing with two textured gold metallic buttons. The oversized shoulders and the pockets display the same Asian inspired pattern as the skirt. The body of the jacket is decorated with different black and gold fibre. Black boucle knit with metallic sparkles in the thread are featured on the sides, with double layered sections of black satin (with tiny iridescent splashes) and black lace overlaid on top. On the sleeves there are sections of translucent gold metallic fabric with dark gold threaded embellishments, separated from a section of pleated velour by yet another gold metallic seam, this one featuring tiny multi-coloured beads throughout; the only use of colours other than gold and black in this outfit. The sleeve cuffs are fitted with black & gold lamé quilt.
Overall, this three piece outfit tends to evade easy description! It was purchased from the original owner who claims it was bought in the late 1970’s, though it looks more early 1980’s to me. A highly unique piece of vintage history.
